Sony Talks About The PS4 at The GDC

Even though many of us hoped that Sony could unveil the Play Station 4 console at the GDC which, unfortunately, did not happen. However, Sony did reveal some intriguing things about the console and its features.

According to Sony, the Play Station 4 is targeting core gamers as its main audience and is designing it as a central device in the living room. Sony has learned from its mistakes with the PS3, so the company decided to use a different approach.

Due to difficult programming with the PS3, Sony chose the 64-bit octa-core processor that has a low heat and power consumption, 2 MB L2 cache per 4 core group and 32kb L1 I/D-cache architecture. This should help developers to debug their codes as they would on the PC. The console contains also contains 8 GB GDDR5 RAM which will have 256-bit wide memory interface.

PlayStation Shader Language supports shaders similar to DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.0 and the GPU supports tessellation. All the streaming and sharing is done through the PS4 hardware, and because of that the console will have an extremely large hard drive.

Moving on, the controller has undergone a significant redesign which we already reported. However, some of the things are still undiscovered. There will not be Start and Select buttons which are now replaced with the Options button. A new Share button allows users to share their gameplay footage and screenshots while the analog touchpad has a resolution of 1920 x 900 pixels.

The last thing is the Play Station 4 Eye, which will now offer high sensitive dual color cameras and will have 1280 x 800 pixels. Unfortunately, the Eye camera will not work on your computer as it will have a special port for the PS4.
