15 million pages across hundreds of major texts from the history of science and medicine are on their way to be digitized to be made freely available online.
Several research institutions and universities are sending their rare book collections to Wellcome Library in London to be scanned and converted into the digital UK Medical Heritage Library, which will exist in the Internet Archive. The process will take around two years.
"We are converting books into searchable data so that users can explore every aspect of 19th-century medicine and develop new insights into this period of unprecedented medical discovery," said Peter Findlay, portfolio manager of digital tech charity Jisc.
Thousands of pages of centuries-old texts are already available online from the Wellcome Library for perusal.
