It's here -- Samsung responding to the market's appetite for oversized smartphones or compact tablets, depending on your perspective. The new Galaxy Mega line of handheld devices could just about fit in your pocket, making them smartphones, but come with screens large enough to make it look like you're tapping away into a tablet.
Both of the two devices launched today, are built on a design similar to the Galaxy Grand, and the Galaxy Note II. Although both are largely similar in size, they differ based how big their screens are; the 5.8-inch Galaxy Mega 5.8, and 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega 6.3. The two even differ with specs.
The Galaxy Mega 6.3 features a screen resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, the same soft-modem that the Galaxy S4 uses, which that lends it 4G LTE 100/50 Mbps support, in addition to HSPA+ 21/5.76, 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC. There could be variants specific to regions in which there is no 4G LTE coverage, or different cellular standards (eg: TSCDMA for China). The 6.3-incher even features an 8-megapixel primary camera, and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing one.
Under the hood, the Galaxy Mega 6.3 features a 1.70 GHz dual-core ARM SoC, 1.5 GB of RAM, 8 or 16 GB of storage (options), and a micro-SDXC slot. Android 4.2.2 "Jelly Bean" is the OS of choice. Powering the beast, is a 3,200 mAh battery. Measuring 167.6 x 88 x 8.0 mm, the Mega 6.3 weighs just under 200 g.
Moving on to its smaller sibling, the Galaxy Mega 5.8, features a screen resolution of 960 x 540 pixels, a leaner soft-modem chip that lends it HSPA+ 21/5.76, 802.11 n, and Bluetooth 4.0, and the same set of cameras as the Mega 6.3. It is driven by a 1.40 GHz dual-core SoC, with 1.5 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage that's expandable with micro-SDXC, and Android 4.2.2 at the helm. A 2,600 mAh battery powers the device. Measuring 162.6 x 82.4 x 9.0 mm, it weighs 182 g.
Pricing and availability will vary, but the first of these will begin rolling out in May.
