Haswell-based Notebooks Will Offer 50% More Battery Life

With just days upon the launch of new Haswell processor architecture, Intel revealed some new details. While the company did say we can expect better battery life, we had no information on what can be expected, until now. Intel's upcoming family of Core processors were designed mobile devices in mind, and the main focus was to bring the lowest possible power consumption.

In a short media briefing, Rani Borkar, corporate vice president and general manager of the Intel Architecture Group, confirmed that Haswell-based notebooks will have 50% more battery life than current Ivy Bridge models and up to go up to 20 times longer in standby mode. All of that is also done without any cost to performance.

There have been a lot of changes to achieve low power consumption, and one of the biggest step to reduce power consumption was to design an on-chip power management that can dynamically adjust the power consumption in various parts of the chip to reduce the overall power draw.

It also has integrated VR technology that will allow to independently and extremely precisely control power consumption of each core, graphics core, system agent within Haswell chip. With that feature, processor can decrease power consumption without compromising performance. Will there be a 50% boost remains to be seen.
