Microsoft has officially released an Office iPhone app and it's free to download. There is one catch though, you have to be a Microsoft Office 365 subscriber and the subscription will set you back $99 per year. Can an Office app optimized for the iPad be far behind?
Since the inception of Office 365, Microsoft has been really pushing its Software as a Service desktop productivity suite and having a app for the iPhone just might get more people interested in using it.
Microsoft calls the app Office Mobile for Office 365 subscribers and states that it is the official Office companion optimized for your iPhone. The app gives uses the ability to view, create and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents and stores them in the cloud on SkyDrive, SkyDrive Pro or SharePoint servers. This allows easy access to the documents from other devices such as a desktop or laptop computer.
The app requires an iPhone 4 or a 5th generation iPod touch running iOS 6.1 or greater, and is currently only available in the United States, but should be coming to other countries in the near future.
