In a statement provided to VideoGamer.com, Sony says that it has identified the problem with last week's firmware update that bricked some peoples' PlayStation 3 consoles. They will be releasing an update to the update on Thursday of next week, June 27th.
In the statement, Sony said,
"We have identified the issue related to the PlayStation 3 software update (version 4.45) that impacted a small number of PS3 systems earlier this week. A new PS3 system software update is planned to be released on June 27 that resolves the issue.
"Thank you for your patience and understanding and we apologize for the inconvenience."
Sony had pulled the 4.45 firmware update shortly after the problem was detected, but there is no word yet on what owners who have bricked consoles will have to do.
