Sony's Exmor RS 13-megapixel BSI (back-side illumination) CMOS camera sensor may be selling like hotcakes, because it's implemented on practically every flagship smartphone launched this year; but competition isn't too far off. Toshiba announced the T4K37, a brand new 13-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor in the 1/3.07 inch format, which lends it a pixel size of 1.12 µm.
The T3K37 offers its 13-megapixel resolution in a 4:3 aspect-ratio. It can capture images up to 30 frames per second at full resolution. Its feature-set includes native color-noise reduction, which results colors across edges from bleeding over; and native high-dynamic range (HDR) processing. Toshiba is targeting the same devices as Exmor RS, high-end smartphones and tablets.
