Gearbox Remaking Homeworld And Homeworld 2

Gearbox Software's CEO disclosed that after the successful acquisition of the licensing rights from THQ, they plan to remake the classic spec strategy series Homeworld. He also stated that they were the only developer to bid for the intellectual property.

CEO Randy Pitchford said that the team is working to update the original graphics to a more modern, high definition look, and while that is in progress they will be release both the original Homeworld and Homeworld 2 on Steam. Anyone who purchases the updated version of the game will also receive the first 1999 (Homeworld) and 2003 (Homeworld 2) versions in their original, unchanged forms.

There was no mention of possible release dates.

Homeworld was originally released on September 28th , 1999. The game was developed by Relic Entertainment and publicshed by Sierra Entertainment. It was the first fully 3D real time strategy space game. The game was later followed by Homeworld: Cataclysm (a stand-alone game released by Barking Dog Studio) and eventually by the full sequel Homeworld 2.

In 2003, Relic released the source code for the original Homeworld game to the community whose members have been creating mods and porting the game to other platforms.
