MediaTek Teases World's First True Octa-Core Mobile SoC

The Power Of 8

MediaTek has done what many would have never anticipated a couple of months ago. The supplier of cheap quad-core chipsets to Chinese Smartphone manufacturers has announced the world's first true Octa-core processor, where all 8 cores work together in tandem, and will reportedly feature performance that matches or surpasses that of the most powerful mobile SoC (based on ARM) currently, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC.

Here are the advantages touted by MediaTek of using its "true" Octa-core solution:

  • Advanced web browsing: With the unique ability to allocate individual browser tabs to CPU cores, MediaTek True Octa-Core allows for a faster, more stable web browsing experiences.
  • Smoother user interfaces: With the ability to delegate user inputs to individual cores and render 3D effects more smoothly, the functionality and appearance of user interfaces in both applications and operating systems are significantly enhanced.
  • Superior gaming experiences: The advanced multi-threaded programming deployed in the MediaTek True Octa-Core, enables different sequences to be allocated to different cores, delivering enhanced video frame-rate processing and exceptionally low-latency gaming experiences.
  • Efficient video playback: When on decoding mode, the battery used for decoding HEVC (H.265) FHD video can be reduced by up to 18 percent compared to current quad-core solutions. While on display mode, MediaTek True Octa-Core provides users 20 percent more frames.

It wasn't a big surprise when the company share price saw a healthy boost in value shortly after the announcement of the world's first true Octa-core mobile chipset, which by the way is dubbed the MediaTek MT6592 SoC.

As of now, we know that the SoC features eight ARM Cortex A7 based CPUs and a PowerVR SGX6xx Rouge series GPU, making it the first chipset maker in the world to release an SoC featuring PowerVR's next-generation (and power-packed) 6 series Rogue GPU.

Products based on the new MT6592 Octa-core chipset is expected to hit the markets towards the end of 2013. Expect a fresh wave of the Chinese super-Smartphones which pack specifications rivalling $750 flagships for just a third of the price.
