Gionee P2 Possibly the Cheapest Android 4.2 Smartphone

Gionee launched its mainstream Gionee P2 smartphone in India, where it's commanding a price tag of 6,499 INR (US $99.5), which could make it the cheapest smartphone running Android 4.2 "Jelly Bean." No doubt, then, that its specifications are entry-level, but definitely worth more than something you'd expect from a $99 device.

To begin with, its 4-inch screen offers WVGA resolution (800 x 480 pixels). No surprises there. In the imaging department, you get a combination of 5-megapixel primary, and 0.3-megapixel front-facing cameras. Things get interesting (as in "worth more than $99") under the hood. It's driven by a dual-core Cortex-A7 CPU clocked at 1.30 GHz, backed by 512 MB of RAM, Mali-400 graphics, 4 GB of expandable storage, a DTS 3D-compliant audio DAC, and a 1,700 mAh battery. Android 4.2.2 "Jelly Bean" with a custom UI comes pre-installed.

At this price, the Gionee P2 spells trouble for $150-ish devices like the Samsung Galaxy S Duos (single-core Cortex-A5 CPU, Android 4.0 ICS, 1,500 mAh battery, etc.).
