Although Android-powered dongles that smarten your idiot-box are years old in the industry, Chromecast is bound to make the form-factor go mainstream. It turns out that Sony's NSZ-GU1 Google TV device is a dongle, and not a set-top box, although it looks nowhere close to as compact as Google's $35 wonder.

The company badge of NSZ-GU1 describes it as an "Internet player." On one end of the device, is an MHL / HDMI connector, on the other, a micro-USB lead to plug it to any of the TV's vacant USB ports for power.

Despite looking bulkier than the Chromecast at 109 x 42 x 22.5 mm, the NSZ-GU1 has a narrower feature-set. Its video output is limited to 720p (1280 x 720 pixels), with LPCM Dolby Digital / DD Plus audio. Connectivity includes 802.11 b/g/n (up to 145 Mbps), and Bluetooth 3.0.
