Tesla Upgrades Small Island To Solar Energy With A Microgrid

Ta'u, a small island in American Samoa that's inhabited by 600 people, has been upgraded from diesel fuel to solar power. A SolarCity/Tesla initiative is now supplying "nearly 100 percent" of the island's energy needs, significantly reducing its use of diesel, which had to be shipped in.

A microgrid consisting of 5,328 solar panels and 60 Tesla Powerpacks are providing the island with its energy. Just 7 hours of sunlight will recharge the setup, which can then provide energy for up to 3 days without sun.

Factoring in the escalating cost of fuel, along with transporting such mass quantities to the small island, the financial impact is substantial, - Tesla

American Samoan and US authorities funded the project.
