Apple App Store Tops $240M On New Year's Day, Breaking Its Record

January 1 was the "busiest day ever" for Apple's App Store. It saw $240 million in purchases during the 24-hour period. Apple also says 2016 was a massively successful year with developers receiving over $20 billion, which was up 40% over 2015. Some of the top grossing apps were Pokemon Go, Clash Royale, and Monster Strike.

Super Mario Run, which was released in December, was the most downloaded app on Christmas and on New Year's Day.

During December as a whole, users spent $3 billion on the store. That monthly revenue figure surpassed all previous months.

2016 was a record-shattering year for the App Store, generating $20 billion for developers, and 2017 is off to a great start with January 1 as the single biggest day ever on the App Store. We want to thank our entire developer community for the many innovative apps they have created — which together with our products — help to truly enrich people's lives. - Philip Schiller, Apple
