Filings from Apple published in the Federal Register reveal the company plans to increase or consolidate its domestic production, but the shift won't cover consumer products. Apple intends to use its existing Mesa, Arizona facility to build servers and data center equipment.
Apple has sought approval from the US Foreign-Trade Zones Board to build "finished products," among which would be "finished server assembly cabinets." The company needs approval to import certain parts without customs duty payments.
It's already building data center equipment within the US, but those efforts are dispersed, taking place at each individual data center. This move will see the company consolidate manufacturing at the Mesa facility.
