NASA has revealed three possible landing locations for its Mars 2020 rover. That rover will head to the planet to collect samples that are intended to return to Earth. NASA has therefore picked areas that offer multiple kinds of rocks and soils.
On the short list for landing spots are Columbia Hills inside Gusev Crater, Jezero Crater, and Gale Crater. Those sites were picked during a workshop in California earlier this month.
NASA hopes to use the Mars 2020 rover to gain a greater understanding of the planet's past, including whether Mars was once home to a lot of microbial life.
