Some of the features that'll reportedly be found in the iPhone 8 are advanced facial scanning and support for some augmented reality capabilities. Those features were discussed in recent reports from JP Morgan's Rod Hall and Goldman Sachs' Simona Jankowski.
The phone is said to use a laser-based 3D sensor for facial recognition and it'll be implemented in a way that's more accurate than Touch ID. Other reports have also indicated face scanning is included with the device.
The inclusion of 3D sensing functionality is increasingly likely, which could enable a robust augmented reality (AR) feature set that we believe will be a key differentiator for the 10-year anniversary iPhone. - Jankowski
Apple is working with Lumentum, a 3D sensor company, says Jankowski. Their partnership could lead to facial scanning tech, improved image resolution, or some kind of augmented reality ability.
