Despite the failure of their massive $32 million Indiegogo crowd funding campaign, Canonical hasn't given up on Ubuntu Touch yet. The open source software company has confirmed that the first stable release of Ubuntu Touch is on schedule, and will be released on October 17th. This will be the version 1.0 release of the mobile OS, but will only include support for the Google Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4. The next version, which will arrive with Ubuntu 14.04, will add support for tablets. Despite this, don't expect retail hardware running on the open source platform before next year.
