WhatsApp Co-Founder Departs To Form Nonprofit

WhatsApp is losing one of its longest-running executives. In 2009, Brian Acton worked with CEO Jan Koum to form the messaging service, which was acquired by Facebook three years ago. Now, Acton is leaving the company to start a nonprofit. Details of the new venture are scarce, but Acton says it's "focused at the intersection of nonprofit, technology and communications."

Due to his time at WhatsApp and the acquisition by Facebook, Acton has a lot of resources to work with. One estimate pegs his net worth at $6.5 billion.

Acton says more will be shared about the project "in the coming months."
