Facebook is shutting down an experiment that involved boosting certain comments critiquing a post for being fake news. The platform was trying to use naturally arising comments from regular users to reduce the spread of illegitimate stories, but it's opted to pursue other paths.
It says this was only a "small test." Given the way the feature operated, it didn't seem like it'd have a notable impact on the spread of fake news. All Facebook did was promote comments including certain words (e.g. "fake" or "lie"). It didn't necessarily highlight comments that would adequately challenge an original post and get viewers to realize the post is about a fake story.
Facebook says it'll "keep working to find new ways" to combat fake news.
