NVIDIA i500 Soft Modem Hustles 1.2 Trillion IOPS

NVIDIA's $370 million purchase of baseband technology-maker Icera is paying off in a big way, with the company announcing the i500 soft modem chip. Designed with a die-area that's at least 40 percent smaller than other baseband chips, the i500 is capable of pushing a staggering 1.2 trillion operations per second. Since it's a soft modem, it's completely reprogrammable to work with newer network technologies. Hypothetically, the chip should keep NVIDIA ready for networks that push terabits of information around to consumer devices.
