Before you start imagining, let me tell you that Google's new service has nothing to do with NVIDIA's Project Shield. Instead, Google's "Project Shield", created in response to a 'Google Ideas' request, has been created to help small websites hold their own against destructive DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks. Small websites can protect themselves better by serving "their content through Google." The product was made keeping in mind countries torn apart due to social issues who need to protect their voice on the internet so that their opinions reach out to a global audience, without being taken down.
Project Shield is an initiative to use Google's infrastructure to protect free expression online. The service currently combines Google's DDoS mitigation technologies and Page Speed Service (PSS), which allow websites to serve their content through Google to be better protected from DDoS attacks.
Interested? You'll have to apply for an invite first as the initiative is under closed beta testing.
