Game developer and digital distribution house Valve and hardware manufacturer Xi3 are teaming up to release the Steam Box. At CES, the two companies showed the early version of the Steam console, which is modelled after the PC maker's X7A line of miniature computers. It was also confirmed that the game console will be Linux-based.
Xi3 reps told Polygon that Piston will offer up to 1 TB of storage and offer CPU and RAM upgrade option. However, Xi3 wouldn't discuss price or any hardware specifications for Piston. The prototype features an I/O board boasting four USB 3.0 ports and four USB 2.0 ports, dual Mini Display ports, one DisplayPort/HDMI port, 1/8" audio in/out, SPDIF optical connector, four eSATAp ports and one Ethernet port.
