VIA became the first chipmaker to launch an ARM-based SoC this CES season, with the WonderMedia PRIZM WM8980. The new chip, designed for tablets and set-top boxes, combines a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU clocked at 1.20 GHz, with Mali-400 dual-core GPU, which features a cross-standard (including H.264) 1080p video decoding engine, and display outputs that include HDMI, LVDS, DVI and DVO, at resolutions up to 1920x1080 @60Hz.
VIA didn't leave out its hardware-encryption IP, by integrating it as the chip's Advanced Hardware Security Engine. To attract developers, the company demonstrated that the chip can handle Google's Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" operating system, and Windows CE7 (not quite Windows RT). The WM8980 doesn't come with a recommended companion soft-modem chip, yet claims fit for devices with 3G cellular interface.
