VIA Announces WonderMedia PRIZM WM8980 Platform

VIA became the first chipmaker to launch an ARM-based SoC this CES season, with the WonderMedia PRIZM WM8980. The new chip, designed for tablets and set-top boxes, combines a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU clocked at 1.20 GHz, with Mali-400 dual-core GPU, which features a cross-standard (including H.264) 1080p video decoding engine, and display outputs that include HDMI, LVDS, DVI and DVO, at resolutions up to 1920x1080 @60Hz.

VIA didn't leave out its hardware-encryption IP, by integrating it as the chip's Advanced Hardware Security Engine. To attract developers, the company demonstrated that the chip can handle Google's Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" operating system, and Windows CE7 (not quite Windows RT). The WM8980 doesn't come with a recommended companion soft-modem chip, yet claims fit for devices with 3G cellular interface.

Combining a highly energy-efficient dual core ARM Cortex-A9 core running at 1.2Ghz with advanced graphics and stunning 1080p video playback capabilities, the PRIZM WM8980 further extends WonderMedia's leadership in the fast-growing entry-level Android media tablet and Windows CE SmartBook markets. With its high-performance, feature-rich design, and support of the latest Android 4.2 OS, the PRIZM WM8980 is optimized for Smart TV, SmartStream for wireless display and multimedia streaming, networked projectors, digital signage, and thin clients.

The PRIZM WM8980 platform features seamless integration of the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast standard into the WonderMedia SmartStream for support of DMR (Digital Media Renderer) and wireless display functionalities over standard compliant and legacy WiFi direct and WiFi devices in both embedded and Android environments, creating the most capable platform for enjoying wireless streaming.

With its built-in NEON Media Engine, the latest hardware video decoding, encoding and processing, the PRIZM WM8980 platform is optimized for multimedia applications offering a rich visual and audio experience. The platform's graphics processing capabilities allow for high display resolutions, which make it ideal to leverage the vast visual entertainment resources available on the Internet.

Boasting built-in interface with Wi-Fi, 3+G and Bluetooth, the WonderMedia PRIZM platform offers the broad range of connectivity options required of today's Smart devices.
