We'd be remiss in our coverage of the news coming out of Blizzard's BlizzCon if we didn't let you know they dropped details on what's new in their upcoming Diablo III expansion, Reaper of Souls. Players will see a new "Adventure Mode", Bounties, and Nephalem Rifts.
Players will be able to select two different modes when they create a new game. The first, "Campaign Mode" is basically the way Diablo III plays now, a linear progression through the game's acts. In "Adventure Mode", the story driven elements have been removed and all the waypoints have been unlocked, which will allow the player to explore the world and acts at their leisure. Players will be allowed to switch between the modes whenever they please, and all difficulty levels are unlocked.
Bounties are optional, randomized objectives such as killing unique monsters, fighting bosses, clearing dungeons or completing events. When a player completes a bounty, they will be rewarded with experience points and gold. Blizzard also want to add Legendary items to the mix, but they are still experimenting with that aspect.
Nephalem Rifts, which were previously called "Loot Runs", are randomized dungeons that are designed to be complete in a 10 to 15 minute time frame. Blizzard describes it thus, "The goal of Nephalem Rifts is to provide players with a rewarding, endlessly replayable experience, one that continually offers new and exciting moment-to-moment gameplay. . .as well as heaps of loot. They're also what senior level designer Jesse McCree likes to describe as an opportunity to "break all the rules."
Here's a video they made showing off the Nephalem Rifts in action in a first look at the expansion.
