China's second-biggest maker of phone equipment, ZTE, has plans to introduce Firefox OS-based smartphone some time this year. According to Bloomberg reports, ZTE's Chief Executive Officer said that they may also offer a device in the U.S. this year.
"We closely monitor the ecosystem and how it evolves. If that is ready and if consumer studies support that data, then we may launch one in the U.S. also this year," said Cheng Lixin, chief executive officer of ZTE's U.S. unit.
Mozilla announced Firefox OS back in July 2012 as an open alternative to Android. They also said the company is working with mobile chipmaker Qualcomm Inc., TCL Communication Technology Holdings Ltd. and ZTE on devices.
