Mozilla Outs Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone

Mozilla's ambitious mobile software project Firefox OS may still be wrapped in scaffolding, but the foundation wants to make every attempt at wooing developers and device makers. In addition to emulators, it unveiled a pair of Developer Preview Phones that run the software out of the box, and are yours to tinker with. Available in fiery-orange (Keon) and white (Peak) flavors, the phones are originally manufactured by Spanish company Geeksphone.

The phone ships with what you would consider entry-level hardware, because it is supposed to scrape Firefox OS' minimum system requirements. Apps that run well on these phones should do so on any Firefox OS phone. To begin with, the phone feature 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreens with HVGA (480 x 320 pixels) resolution. The phone is driven by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 single-core CPU clocked at 1.00 GHz, backed by 512 MB of RAM, and 4 GB of storage expandable with SDHC. The SoC features a mainstream baseband, supporting UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA). Imaging is care of a 3-megapixel primary camera.
