Google Launches Chromebook Pixel

The Chromebook Pixel was rumoured a lot, but most of the leaks were considered fake. However, as Google launched a new notebook, it appears that previous rumours were true. Google has announced new Chromebook Pixel, designed for the web and comes with some impressive specs.

The Pixel is packing a 12.85-inch touchscreen with impressive 2560 x 1700 pixels resolution, resulting with 239 pixels per inch. The screen is covered in Gorilla Glass 2 and actually it is the main feature that sets this notebook apart from other Chromebooks.

"This Chromebook has the highest pixel density of any laptop screen on the market today. Packed with 4.3 million pixels, the display offers sharp text, vivid colours and extra-wide viewing angles. With a screen this rich and engaging, you want to reach out and touch it - so we added touch for a more immersive experience," an official Google spokesperson told the BBC.

It is also powered by a 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5 processor with integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000, has 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. If 32 GB of memory is not good enough for you, do not worry as every Chromebook Pixel owner gets an additional 1 TB of cloud-based Google Drive access free for 3 years.

In terms of connectivity, there will be two versions, one with WiFi support and one with LTE and 64 GB of storage. The difference in the price is significant, precisely more than $100 for the LTE model. With anodized aluminum casing, the Chromebook Pixel features an integrated 720p HD webcam and has a triple-microphone configuration which helps improve noise cancellation. Other features include two USB ports, a mini-DisplayPort, a mic/headphone jack and an SD card reader.

Now to the bad things. As the Chromebook Pixel is built from anodized aluminum, the price is not cheap. However, recommended price from Google sets this notebook to the high-end segment. The device is priced at $1,299 in the US and £1,049 in the UK making it six times more expensive than other Chromebooks on the market.
