Marvell announced a quad-core SoC named PXA1088 that is aimed at phones and tablets in the "$100 range". Their new chip is based on ARM's quad-core Cortex A7 with added WCDMA and TD-SCDMA modem technology. According to the company, the SoC provides high performance and low power-mobile computing with support for every global broadband standard.
The Marvell PXA1088 provides a low-cost 3G platform for both smartphones and tablets. Marvell's entire platform includes the Avastar 88W8777 WLAN, Bluetooth 4.0, FM single-chip SoC and the L2000 GNSS Hybrid Location Processor.
To provide low-cost, the PXA1088 is backward pin-to-pin compatible with its dual-core single-chip Unified 3G Platform, the PXA988/PXA986. This should allow partners to easy upgrade without additional design cost. The chip is currently being tested by clients globally and is expected to be commercially available in 2013.
