Mozilla showed early development of their operating system almost a year ago. It seems that the Firefox OS has finally reached the final stage as the company officially launched their Firefox OS for mobile phones. Along with the Firefox OS announcement, Mozilla has announced a partnership with Qualcomm to use their Snapdragon chipsets along with four smartphone manufacturers: ZTE, Alcatel, LG and Huawei.
"Firefox OS brings the freedom and unbounded innovation of the open Web to mobile users everywhere. With the support of our vibrant community and dedicated partners, our goal is to level the playing field and usher in an explosion of content and services that will meet the diverse needs of the next two billion people online," said Mozilla's CEO, Gary Kovacs.
The Firefox OS is an open source OS that uses HTML5-based applications. Most of the apps are simply websites that can be easily found via integrated search engine. For now, it is hard to get a real impression as there are no phones on the market, yet. Although, Mozilla has made a video that shows the Firefox OS capabilities.
The Firefox OS will try to compete with Android and iOS, and so far 17 carriers have agreed to sell Firefox OS handsets. Unfortunately, one of the biggest players on the mobile market and the biggest potential partner, Samsung, has announced that will skip Mozilla's smartphone operating system.
Like Mozilla announced, ZTE has a Firefox OS-based smartphone in the work. Named ZTE Open, the phone sports a 3.5-inch screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM7225A SoC, which has a Cortex-A5 processor, clocked at 1.0 GHz combined with 256 MB of RAM and Adreno 200 GPU. There is a 512 MB of storage with 2 GB microSD card.
As we move on, there is a 3.2-megapixel fixed focus rear camera, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, GPS, FM Radio and a 1,200mAh battery. It is obvious that ZTE targets this phone for low-end segment at a reasonable price.
Alcatel One Touch Fire
Second manufacturer that showed Firefox OS-based handset is Alcatel with its Alcatel One Touch Fire. Like the ZTE's smartphone, it also features a 3.5-inch screen with the same Qualcomm Snapdargon SoC. It also comes with 256 MB of RAM and 512 MB of storage. On the connectivity side, there is 3G, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth and GPS.
