The Puma drone has been given the OK by the FAA to fly over US land. Puma was originally developed as a military drone, but it has since been applied to commercial tasks. The FAA has been slow to come up with regulation regarding all commercial drones but it has, on occasion, allowed drones like the Puma to fly over US territory. In this case, the drone is being used by BP to surveil the Prudhoe Bay oil field in Alaska.
Other commercial drones that are considered low-risk may be given the same legal status by the FAA later this year.
