A few changes have been made to Facebook's Trending Topics section. With the latest update, the section now displays the same topics to all users in a regional manner and each topic comes with a publisher headline.
Facebook has also improved its system for determining what's actually trending. It'll factor in how many publishers are discussing the story along with looking at engagement counts.
The update partly reverses a change that was made in August 2016, which saw the removal of topic descriptions. Facebook says it'll select headlines "based on a combination of factors including the engagement around the article on Facebook, the engagement around the publisher overall, and whether other articles are linking to it."
By displaying the same topics to everyone on a regional basis, Facebook removes the need for a personalized algorithm.
