We've heard about Twitter's interest in expanding its character limit for years and now it appears the social network is finally ready to move past 140-character tweets. Earlier this week, the network began testing a new 280-character limit with a small set of beta testers.
Twitter product manager Aliza Rosen explained in a blog post that the 140-character limit has been a "major cause of frustration." Once people are able to write longer posts, it appears they start to tweet more.
Though some changes have been made to the character limit over time, such as by adding exemptions for images and other media, this will be the first time the company is actually moving beyond 140-characters.
